Implementations of Genericty in
Java Published in Rensselaer Polytechnic
Insitute's Computer Science Seminar April 1999
Abstract
Although Java has wide spread acceptance as an object oriented
programming language, one distinctive OO feature is missing,
Genericity (or Parametric Types). In this paper the author presents
an overview of the current state of Genericity in Java and outlines
the basic requirements for a useable and sound implementation of
Genericity for Java. The author reviews three proposed
implementations of Genericity: GJ, NextGen, and PolyJ. Good design
decisions and short-comings of the proposed solutions will be
discussed as the implementations are compared to the defined
requirements. The author concludes by providing an argument for the
best proposed solution.
